Hair Freshener

I’ve been wanting to try dry shampoo forever, but I heard so many negative things {like it turns your hair white or leaves behind residue} that I put it on the back burner. Now, since I’ve lightened my hair, frequent and damaging hair washing is out of the question, so I finally decided to give dry shampoo a go. Yesterday, while out gallivanting at Wal Mart, I headed to the hair products aisle and spotted got 2b rockin’ it encore fresh dry shampoo. It was less than $4, so obviously this was my choice for my first product test. I typically like to test out hair products when I have no immediate plans so, JUST in case it goes horribly wrong, I have time to tackle my mane. Last night I happened to have dinner plans, and my day of running errands ran VERY late leaving me ZERO time to wash and restyle my hair. I had no choice but to blindly use my just purchased dry shampoo, and luckily – SUCCESS! It worked like a charm leaving my hair feeling, smelling, and looking fresh.

There are a few things you should know before dabbling in dry shampoo. First thing’s first here; although I found this very effective, it is NOT a miracle worker, so make sure your expectations are realistic. This product will help you “skip a day of shampooing”. Although a brilliant substitution, you will not achieve the same result as actually washing your hair. If you have super thin and oily hair, dry shampoo’s may not be the answer. I have VERY thick, light brown hair. I usually skip a day or two of washing anyway, so this product is perfect for me in that I don’t need a ton of assistance skipping a day or two.

Secondly, read and follow the instructions. This product is in aerosol form and comes out in short, fast bursts, so make sure you point and aim before you shoot! Sparingly apply at the root in small sections and let it sit for a few minutes. It comes out powdery white, but don’t be alarmed! Just rub it in with your fingertips, and then brush it out and it disappears. If it doesn’t disappear, you probably used too much. That’s why I said sparingly…you can always add more if needed, but if you add too much too start you’ll be left with a greyish tint {practice makes perfect…don’t be discouraged if you eff it up the first time}.

Lastly, keep it simple sister! I’ve watched several video tutorials for this product where women did extras, like leaving it in for 20+ minutes and/or blow drying the product. These extra steps are not necessary. These type of products are meant to be quick-fix solutions and to help avoid damage, so these extra steps pretty much defeat the purpose of the product itself.

All in all, this product gets a solid 2 thumbs up from me, so here’s hoping that if you decide to try it that you have the same success with it!

Vest Intentions

For my loyal followers and those of you who know me, you know I have a ‘minor’ obsession with blazers. Now since the weather has warmed up, I have found a new love…the vest. {Seriously, I wore a vest 4 out of 7 days last week. It’s a problem}

What started off as a undergarment for men’s formal wear has evolved into a fashion craze, especially for women. With the endless options today, a vest can compliment any look and fit into anyone’s personal style. Whether your punk, prep, or glam, I assure you – there is a vest for you! Intrigued yet? Well I shopped around to find you the best vest’s to suit your styling needs. Check ’em out!

First up we have the classic waistcoat. Certainly your most handsome choice, the waistcoat is your best bet for formal attire, whether it be for a special occasion or an important work function. The waistcoat is sleek, modern, and super sophisticated.

contrast lapel waist coat $89.99 at Mango

If you want something fun and flirty, an embellished vest will do the trick. A little shimmer and shine is a perfect addition for a night out or to pretty up a day look.

beaded vest $59.90 at Zara

If you’re into the menswear trend, then you should try a pinstripe vest. Great for business casual or day wear, this is one you’ll wear over and over.

pinstripe vest $54.99 at the Gap

Another classic, the denim vest is a summer favorite. The perfect contrast to a girlie dress, you can count on this one to always stay in style.

denim vest $28.00 at Old Navy

Channel your inner hippie and get boho chic with a crochet vest. Crochet is soft and natural, and because it has little to no structure, it’s also ultra feminine.

crochet & fringe vest $27.80 at Forever 21

If you’re a biker babe (or want to be) you’ll look bad ass in a leather moto vest. This one will add some edge to you’re every day casual look, or toughen up your LBD.

studded leatherette vest $19.99 Forever 21

Probably my fav of the bunch is the cargo vest. Inspired by safari and military trends, this vest offers a trendy cool and casual look.

4 in one convertible jacket $98 Victoria’s Secret

Want some glam? Try a {faux} fur vest. Yes, you’ll look like a high maintenance bitch, but if you’re wearing a fur vest, you probably are a high maintenance bitch. Own it.

fur & cable vest $22.99 Forever 21

And so goes my wish list of must have vests. Do you have a fav? Or {if you’re vest obsessed like me} do you need them all?

Wardrobe Woes

I was gutting my closet the other day which inspired me to, of course, blog about it. So first things first ladies… does the pic above accurately depict how your closet looks right now? I thought so. Keep reading…this post’s for you.

Do you HATE wearing the same top/dress/skirt more than once? Do you wear something {I’m talking special event or evening wear, not everyday wear just to clarify} and push it back to the darkest corner of your closet? Every time something comes up, like a party or a wedding, do buy something brand new? This, which I’m sure has been pointed out to you by your significant other, is complete madness. We all have closets overflowing with clothes that we haven’t worn in weeks, months, or even years. So before you become the next guest on TLC’s Hoarders, let me give you a few tips to make the best of your wardrobe.

Most people will say the first thing you should do is go through you’re closet and get rid of everything you haven’t worn in the past month or so to Good Will or Salvation Army, etc. This is wrong for 2 reasons; 1. Maybe you haven’t worn it because of the season OR 2. You forgot you had it! That’s what happens when you have a SHIT ton of clothes.

The FIRST thing you should do is call up your buddies and host a clothes swap {don’t call me greedy yet, I’ll get to the donations part!}. The idea is that you all bring clothes, shoes, accessories, handbags, etc. that you no longer want or need and swap amongst your friends. This way you’re getting new duds for free and a much needed girls night . Don’t worry if you all are different shapes and sizes. Everyone hangs on to clothes that are too big or too small, and sometimes “one size” really does fit most. Whatever clothes & accessories are left unclaimed can THEN be donated to your local charitable thrift store. This way you’re getting more donations, so invite as many friends and acquaintances as you can! You can even make a night of it with wine and munchies. Send invites, make a Facebook event – the more the merrier, right?

SECOND – As much as it may pain you, DO NOT KEEP the unclaimed items. I know you’ll be tempted, and I know it’s devastating to get rid of that 2 sizes too small dress you’ve been hanging onto for 3 years because you KNOW you’ll fit into one day. Let’s be honest here….if you haven’t by now, you probably won’t. And seeing it hanging in your closet is a constant nagging reminder of the ‘freshmen 10’ or what child birth has done to your body, so dump it already.

The THIRD thing you should do is organize your closet, whether it’s color coordinated, by day to evening,  or work to social. Have a designated area for shoes and accessories, and store seasonal pieces like outerwear and hates/scarves in bins or totes. Organize it in a way that makes it easy for you to navigate, therefore easier to find things depending on what you’re dressing for.

The FOURTH thing you should do is shop what’s left. What I mean by this is take an item, that perhaps you’ve already worn and are likely not to wear again, and make as many different outfits as you can out of this piece. When you’re pressed for time, you don’t think of what you can do differently with that piece so you push it aside. By predetermining different outfit ideas, you’ll save time {and money}, and get more wear out of each piece. You can wear the same thing over and over and achieve many different looks, therefore making the most of your current collection.

Take this piece for example. This classic navy polka dot cami can be worn many different ways and make completely different looks.

polka dot cami $34.90 @ Dynamite

A simple cardigan, some classic skinnies, and bright shoes & accessories make a perfect daytime look.

cardigan $26.90, skinny jeans $42.90 at Dynamite   pink wedge $39.98, bangles $15 at Spring

A white pencil skirt and killer heels create a sexy evening look.

pencil skirt $24.90 at Dynamite  platform heels $60, clutch $30, earrings $10 at Spring

Some neutral slacks and a structured blazer is a great work look for any professional.

white blazer $44.90, cropped pants $34.90 at Dynamite  taupe heels $29.98 , squared handbag $29.98 at Spring

Easy right? Your fav top is no longer a one trick pony. Now it’s up to you to take your fav pieces and create endless looks.

So the next rainy day, get organized! There’s nothing to lose and everything to gain…like more closet space to buy new clothes. 😉

Summer Solids

Today was the first “hot” day of the season. I spent the day outside with these 2….

then had a BBQ followed by a few cold ones.

It was a pretty awesome day. This got me REALLY effing pumped for long, hot summer days and also got me thinking about all the things I can’t wait to wear. It’s been six loooong months of restricting jeans, stifling boots, and hat hair. Finally we can move on to tank tops and flips flops, which brings me to my first of four things I’m excited about for summer :

1.Sandals & Flips Flops

Yes, it’s time to take off those sweaty, suffocating boots and free your feet! It’s about time someone actually got to see that $60 pedicure {or your $6 self-pedi}. Here are a few on my wishlist.

elastic strap gladiator $34.58, cut out lace up $34.58, dolce vita dora $59.14, havaianas $18.04 @ American Eagle

2. Denim Shorts & Western Boots

This combo is a summer classic and a fav amongst the likes of Miley Cyrus and Jessica Simpson. I’ve worn the same boots for about 7 years and they’re still in amazing shape, so I highly suggest skipping the cheapie fashion styles and getting a real pair. They’re pricey, but they’ll last a lifetime. If you’re a local, I suggest hitting up First Western Boutique in downtown St. John’s. Otherwise Shepler’s has a great variety and ships internationally.

tan marsh goat cowgirl boot $384.74-$394.87 @ Shepler’s & destroyed denim short $30.06 @ AE

3. Funny Sunnies

Yes you can wear shades during winter, but only in summer can you get away with sunnies as a headband and all those bright & over sized frames. I’ve got a small army of colored Wayfarers lying in wait.

two toned neon wayfarer $8.90, purple glam sunglasses $5.00, pink framed aviators $5.00 @ Garage

4. Braids

Jenn braids back her bang, Sienna does a braided updo, its a side style for Kim, & Nicole braids her pony

Undoubtedly the hairstyle of summer is braids. Traditional, french, fishtail…there are so many different ways to braid your hair and it’s ever evolving. It’s casual and summery, but still maintains an ultra feminine look.

And that ends my short-list of summer cravings! What summer look are you dying to break out?

2012 Met Ball’s Best Mess

The Met Ball is described as the fashion industry’s “Night of Nights”, but this year it was a night of frights as our fav starlets showed up one after another in what can only be described as complete disasters.  Since the annual event is hosted by Vogue’s editor and chief, Anna Wintour, one would assume that all the stars would show up in the sexiest and most stunning gowns they could get their hands on. Well, you know what happens when you assume…

Kirsten Dunst in Rodarte & Mary-Kate Olsen in her own label The Row

Alexa Chung in Marc Jacobs & Coco Rocha in vintage Givenchy

Mia Wasikowska in Prada & Elizabeth Banks in Mary Katrantzou

Holy Jesus in the garden…

Can I just start by saying WTF! Forgive me for getting a little worked up, but who the hell told these women it was okay to venture out into public like this, let alone the freakin Met Ball? Where were the mirrors and Polaroid cameras? Where were the stylists? WHERE were the friends and family??? I know some of your are saying  “style is a form of artistic expression…blah blah blah”, but let’s just be honest and agree that these women look like they just hopped off the crazy train.

A little harsh? Okay, I will give credit where credit’s due. They are (for the most part) right on trend. Kirsten & Alexa are both wearing menswear inspired frocks, while Mia is honoring the collar trend. Coco is rocking the colored tips trend and the color block trend, and Elizabeth is doing peplum.  I guess we’ll just call this more insight on hot trends gone wrong. As for Mary-Kate, there is no excuse to show up like the wicked witch of the east, but I guess bad press is still press? While these fashion blunders were all wrong for this event, I will add that Coco’s outfit was nuts – yet so fun. It would have been perfect for something like the MTV Movie Awards or an event of that nature. Same goes for Mia’s modest gown. This mormon inspired piece would have been SO much better if it was shortened to just above the knee. Remember…dress for the occasion, ladies!

My pick for best dressed?Ashley and Dianna. The above stars could take a cue from these 2 newbies because they looked phenomenal. THIS is how you dress to attend the fashion event of the year… sexy as hell! Their natural and casual hairstyles are the perfect compliment to downplay the glamorous gowns, keeping the looks fresh and modern.

Ashley Greene in Donna Karan & Dianna Agron in Carolina Herrera

And if you’re going to take a fashion risk, PLEASE do so in shimmering gold! I know this looks insane, but girl can rock a turban and her body looks incredible.

Karolina Kurkova in Rachel Zoe

What do you think? Who were your best and worst dressed picks?

Denim Denim Denim…

Today I’m talking about the hottest and most current trends in denim. Whether it’s colors, shorts or one pieces,  denim is the epitome of casual chic. An obvious classic, denim has become a staple in your everyday wardrobe and has evolved into much more than just a basic classic boot cut. Depending on the fit, wash, and style you can make denim work for just about any occasion. Check out the trends and see what you might be missing out on!

Colored denim has quickly become Spring’s hottest fashion trend. From pastels to bold hues – you name it, we want it! This is  a great way to add some zip to your outfit and really stand out. Colors like yellow and pink make for great day wear, while red and purple can create a sexy night time look.

Another hot trend for Spring and Summer is printed denim. A nod to the 90’s, a fun floral print is a flirty and feminine way to update your summer look.

White denim is fresh and clean. It can make a great dressy or office look paired with a black shirt or blazer, or go rocker chic and pair with leather and an oversize tee.

A denim shirt looks light and casual left open over a cute graphic tee or simple tank. Go long and pair with leggings or shorts for day wear, or go tailored and tucked in with a fitted style.

Offset a pretty little dress with a denim jacket. The thrift store is a great place to hunt for one. These have been a popular trend in every decade so you’re bound to find a gem. Not only will you get it at a steal, but you’ll avoid the stiffness of a new jacket since the denim will likely be soft and worn in already.

A vest can also down play a pretty little dress by dressing them down, making them perfect for day wear. This will add some edge and flare to any outfit and will be extra comfy without the sleeves.

Nothing says summer like a romper. Try sticking to a lightweight denim to avoid heavy wrinkles or folds at the waist and added bulk in unwanted areas, like the bust or hips.

This can be a toughie to pull off, but if you can you’ll look long and lean. Be careful not to let this style overwhelm you. Try wearing heels, adding an over sized bag, and even adding a big floppy hat or fedora to tone down the all over denim look.

For a feminine look, a denim dress will do! A denim dress is perfect for outdoor events like a BBQ or a concert. Since the denim is a little heavier it’s not as likely to blow up and reveal your (cringe) panties and is easy to clean if you drop some ketchup or get stubborn grass stains.

Everyone has a classic pair of denim shorts (if you don’t, you should!), but today there are so many other options. Colored, high-waisted, pleated, bermuda, cut offs….the options are endless!

The denim skirt has gone back in time, and not only is this mini a solid choice, but pleated and button down styles that were popular in the 90’s are back in a big way.

For a retro vibe try a bell bottom, flare, or super flare. This style works best on tall and slim physiques. If you’re petite or plus, a boot cut or slim flare is a great alternative.

If you’re OBSESSED with denim (much like myself and these 3) why not try a head to toe look? Sounds like a fashion faux pas, I know, but this is super easy to pull off. Just make sure you’re denims are in a different wash. Pair dark and light, distressed and solid, colored and traditional blue…you get the idea.

A rocker chick’s go-to denim is a pair of distressed jeans.  This is another one I think everyone should have in their closet. You can do summer casual by cuffing them up at the bottom and throwing on some flip flops, or trendy with boots or heels.

See something you need?? Head over to forever 21! They’ve got a great selection of everything denim. Here’s what I found:

colored skinny $28.80, bell bottom $32.50, distressed skinny $33.80, printed skinny $28.28

cut off short $21.80, floral short $23.80, white bermuda $18.80, high waist short $15.26, pink short $18.80

shirt $21.80, jacket $35.80, vest $29.90, halter dress $29.90, acid romper $27.80

I don’t think I need to add any comment here, but just in case – when I said do a head to toe denim look, this is  NOT what I had in mind.

Also don’t do this…

…or this. And thank you in advance.
